There’s a certain satisfaction in a little bit of pain. Really?

Pain comes in all forms: the small twinge, a bit of soreness, the random pain. The normal pains we live with everyday. Then there’s the kind of pain you can’t ignore. A level of pain so great that it blocks out everything else… Makes the rest of your world fade away, until all we can think about is how much we hurt. How we manage our pain is up to us. Pain. We anesthetize, ride it out, embrace it, ignore it, and for some of us the best way to manage pain is to just push through it.

Pain is the most common reason that people seek medical attention. Today, for instance, 12 out of my 19 patients came to me complaining about some sort of pain. For each of them the pain represents a different thing, for some the pain, despite the discomfort it offers, is even a way to gain something, such as attention; be it mine attention, the doctor’s, or the family’s. But pain is actually hard to define because it’s a subjective sensation. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as an “unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage”. A friend of mine, a general practice doctor, told me the other day that he considers pain as “whatever the patient tells me it is”.

Pain is a signal that the body has been damaged or something is wrong. In evolutionary terms pain was a signal, which told us to stop what we were doing or to take alternative action. Human being created ways to turn pain into something much more sophisticated, we can feel pain in situations when actually there’s no threaten to our body integrity or our lives. Some studies showed that we can really feel pain in sympathy for our beloveds whom experience a real pain. There’s even a disease, God, whose beholders feel lots of pain and there’s no physical stimulus or neural damage (fibromyalgia).

Pain. You just have to ride it out, hope it goes away on its on. Hope the wound that caused it heals. There are no solutions, no easy answers. You just breathe deep and wait for it subsides. Most of the time pain can be managed, but sometimes the pain gets you when you least expect it, hits way below the belt and doesn’t let up. Pain. You just have to fight through, because the truth is you can’t outrun it… And life always makes more.

Dream away your life
Someone else’s dream
Nothing equals nothing

Letting go is not my thing
Walk away, won’t let it happen again
I’m not very smart

Why should I feel sad for what I never had?
Nothing equals nothing

Turn to stone, lose my faith: I’ll be gone before it happens.

– Madonna – Gone, from the album Music
